My Philosophy

Birth is a normal function of the body and a natural process NOT a disease, illness or problem. Birth should be approached as a special family/social event that offers the potential for tremendous personal growth and fulfillment.

My deep belief is that women are perfectly created to give birth and that with good nutrition, supportive care, and the skills of a trained birth attendant every woman is capable of a positive, even joyful, birth experience. I also believe that each woman has the right to choose how, with whom and where she gives birth, whether she chooses to give birth in the hospital, a birth center or at home. Research clearly bears out that if women are given sound information and allowed to play an active part in the decision making in their care, that they are able to experience their births as a positive and empowering event. I strongly believe that natural childbirth is healthiest for all mothers and babies, but mothers should be supported in WHATEVER informed choices they make during labor and birth.

Training, Education & Experience

I have over 5 years experience providing labor support, and birth assistance in the home, hospital & birth center. I am currently a midwife-assistant with Birthwise in Chatham County, an independent homebirth midwifery service. I also teach independent childbirth classes and host free community classes on various aspects of pregnancy, birth, and parenting in Randolph County.

I studied Psycho-social Studies at the University of East London in Barking, Essex. But after a year of youth services work I knew it wasn't for me. When I became pregnant with Owen in 1996, I began studying every book I could get my hands on about pregnancy, labor, birth and midwifery. It was then that I knew my heart was in birth.

I completed my DONA doula training with Ann Tumblin in Raleigh and began teaching childbirth classes and practicing as a doula with Randolph Pregnancy Care Center. I am a third year Advanced Midwifery Studies student with Ancient Art Midwifery Institute and I plan to take the NARM examination for CPM certification by 2007.

Since the DONA training in I have completed the Ministry of Midwifery, Introduction to Midwifery Workshop, and in 2002 I completed a Midwifery Skills Lab with AAMI to gain more skills and experience. In March of 2004 I went to Senegal, West Africa to participate in the pilot program for the African Birth Collective. I am certified in Adult and Infant CPR, and neonatal resuscitation.
